  1. We were so bad that we borrowed someone’s black and white television that was lacking the channel knob, so we secured it with a fork and the tines to adjust the channel.

  2. That was me, the human remote, as well. My father enjoyed playing with words, so when I heard “Chip the flannel Nome,” I knew I’d been given orders to go start turning the silver dial. We only had about 6 channels, so it didn’t take long.

  3. As a child growing up in those days, I remember how simple life was with just 13 channels on the television and only 5 of them actually working. Nothing will be on about 2 a.m., I recall. Until the morning, the whole station was turned off.

  5. My grandmother’s first color television set is now in our possession.
It’s a 1967 model with an ultrasonic-controlled remote control. It has volume up/down, channel up/down, and off, but not on, according to my memory.

  7. It was also the 1980s. Well, at least for us poor kids. If you had a) rabbit ears with foil on them, or b) a small TV on top of the big TV because the sound didn’t fit on the big TV, you got bonus points.

Both a and b were available to us. We used the smaller console for sound when watching the big one because our old one didn’t have any.

  8. For a variety of reasons, this caption is incorrect.

    1. In the 1960s, Kodachrome was invented. It provides us with the vibrant colors of summer and the green of summer.

    2. Televisions in the 1970s did not have the same MCM design as this one.

    3. In the 1960s and 1970s, there were real remote controls. This photograph was taken in 1958/59.

  10. Our TV’s tuning knob broke off, so I had to adjust the channel with a pair of needle-nose pliers kept on top of the wooden cabinet.

  11. When I was in control of the remote…

    Mom: Switch to channel 11.
Click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click
Mom: You’re moving too fast; the dial is going to break!
Click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click

  12. It was I who was doing this. I don’t mean literally… That is not how I would have tucked my shirt into my jammies. However, I was in charge of the remote control for our black-and-white television. I was also in charge of antenna auto-tuning.

  13. Of course, there was no “surfing” channel. Since TV Guide informed you of all 12 channels’ programming and off-air time, you KNEW what was on. This meat remote was only used a few times each evening or when there were two programs on at the same time.

  14. “Turn the switch to ABC,” Dad says.

Me – rises, crosses the bed, and starts turning the dial.

“Don’t turn the dial too hard or you’ll smash it,” Dad warns.

“Why do you make me change the channel if you don’t want me to break it?” I ask.

“Go to your place,” Dad says.

    In 1975, a child’s life.
