I would like to share with you all the time I was politely dissed by R.L. Stine. I was in 4th Grade and mailed my book to him to autograph.

  1. In my yearbook, I attempted to create grids so that people could write and sign in a logical order. The first girl to sign it said, “That’s dumb,” and signed on a website with a candid photograph of herself. No one used the grid, in reality. I was never able to find out why they didn’t.

  2. I don’t recall anything about The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena or any of the other Goosebumps books; all I remember is that I loved them.

  3. To me, this looks like a stamp. The way the black has white spots where it wasn’t supposed to be… Owing to the rough surface of the textured “Goosebumps” on the cover, a stamp will come out pretty crappy.

  4. “Please switch to page 30 if you chose to sign on the line.
Please turn to page 72 if you pulled an alpha step and signed wherever the fuck you want.”

  5. Based on a Google image search, the signature does not resemble RL stines. He never spells out “ne”; it’s just a few scribbles on a piece of paper.

  6. Is it likely that, because he is left-handed, he covered your request with his wrist when signing a book with muscle memory, as he has done thousands of times before?

  7. Hey, I’m a new author, and I’ve had a few friends and family members ask me to sign their books, so I did some research and discovered that the standard place to sign books is on the title page… Every day, learn something new!

  8. “I’d like you to sign right here. What the hell is going on? No one tells Jovial Bob what to do! pLeAsE SigN riGHt hERE! *scoffs* *seals the first page * Boy, I get to choose my own adventure.” Stine, R.L.

  9. He’s really a pretty chill person, from what I recall. If my memory serves me right, this is his style of humor. I recall him from elementary school, about the same time as OP.

  10. When I was a kid, I was a big fan of R.L. Stine and went to one of his book signings. I had spent so much time brainstorming ideas for his books that I was ecstatic to present it to him. He gave me a blank, uninterested face and promptly threw it in the garbage. I didn’t bother reading it or even looking at it. I never read another one of this jerk’s books after that.

  11. T.I.L. that R.L. Stine was not a pen name, which I had always assumed for some reason. I was going to say that if it was a pen name, the signature would differ because the author doesn’t have it set in stone, but Google says it’s his real name, so I’m not sure.

  12. I once went to a school table quiz competition and was questioned for the author of Goosebumps. We were neck and neck with the table next to us, so I put down Robert Lawrence Stine for my team, but it was marked incorrectly; they were only accepting R.L Stine, so we lost.

  13. I wrote to this guy three times and received a generic postcard in return.

Lloyd Alexander responded with an autographed pamphlet about his life after I wrote him a letter. “Wiccy, best wishes from Lloyd Alexander”

It meant a lot to me back then, and it still means a lot to me now.

  14. He was working through a stack of books with his right hand. With the left, quickly open, and with the right, sign the front page. I’m sure he never saw the message.
